Round Table 1 on Supply Security, Fit-for-Form Ergonomics and Textile Waste:
September 4th 2025, 2:00PM - 3:15PM
address the safety, fit, and sustainability of emergency service uniforms.
PARTICIPATING COMPANIES
0
%
of UK ambulance staff report ill-fitting uniforms; 66% say they're too hot in summer, and 40% too cold in winter.

Protecting the Emergency Services with Blue Light Uniforms
Emergency services rely on blue light workers' professional uniforms to ensure identification, protection, and functionality. It’s crucial that these uniforms and PPE are ergonomic, properly fitting, and resilient, particularly in times of geoeconomic or geopolitical instability, which can disrupt supply chains and cause delays, as seen during the pandemic. Effective management of textile waste is also vital to avoid security risks, such as uniforms being intercepted or impersonated.
The PCIAW® Round Table on Protecting the Emergency Services with Blue Light Uniforms will bring together stakeholders to address uniform performance, fit, security, and sustainable solutions, helping the sector meet net-zero obligations.

ROUND TABLE TOPICS 2025
Round Table # 1 - What PCIAW® wants to know
- Supply Chain & Localisation: Many emergency services experienced professional clothing delivery delays during the pandemic; several are now seeking better supply chain visibility and regional manufacturing.
- Fit & Functionality Challenges: Clothing diverse workforces remains difficult, with fit issues most common in trousers, stab-proof vests, and footwear—especially for specific demographics.
- Product Innovation & Ergonomics: The industry is redesigning garments to enhance comfort, fit, and performance—prioritising lightweight, breathable, and ergonomic materials in future tenders.
- Sustainability & Waste: There’s growing interest in eco-design—using recycled materials, offering repair services, and improving end-of-life garment handling, though gaps remain in waste tracking and security.
- Cost Efficiency & Wearer Input: Services are reviewing uniform needs to avoid over-specification and are increasingly supporting wearer trials to ensure functional, cost-effective uniform choices. Manufacturers are navigating the transition to PFAS-free materials, weighing the effects on oil repellence, product durability, laundering needs, and developing alternative treatments and fabrics.
