Top biomaterial manufacturer Genomatica and nylon material innovator Aquafil have joined forces to pioneer a new demonstration facility where the largest quantity of 100% renewable nylon-6 will be manufactured.

The impressive multi-year agreement develops the two companies’ existing relationship; earlier this year, they jointly produced the first ton of bio nylon-6 precursor at a pilot scale.

The shift to a demonstration scale plant will give Genomatica the opportunity to supply renewable nylon to more brands than ever, particularly those who are considering the implementation of renewable and sustainable practices.

It is expected that the first production runs will create 50 tons of bio-nylon for pre-commercial use, with further plans to continue offering bio-nylon to partners until commercial scale plants are set up.

As interest in sustainable textiles has soared in recent years, companies have sought to optimise their supply chains and embed circularity into their operations.

Unfortunately, the $960 billion textile industry is one of the largest polluters in the world, with chemical treatments and greenhouse gas emissions with nylon production emitting 60 million tons of emissions per year.

Water pollution, toxic chemical waste, and lack of resource efficiency are key contributors in polluting our planet.
