Tecman Advanced Healthcare Products is developing PPE with Optec – a new biomaterial reusable face shield system designed to help the NHS reach its carbon emission reduction targets.
At the start of COVID-19, the critical need for safe and reliable PPE to safeguard frontline healthcare workers allowed British manufacturing to prove astonishing resiliency and agility. But it concurrently heightened concerns about the environmental impact of disposable PPE.
In a recent survey carried out by Tecman, 90% of the 156 healthcare workers questioned expressed increasing concerns about the environmental consequence of PPE.
Tecman’s latest progress addresses these concerns directly. The Optec reusable face shield system from the Leamington-based company is supported by their 4 Pillars of Comfort. This approaches the requirement for a protective and comfortable experience that is more environmentally conscious and boasts a lower cost per wear.
Since spring 2020, the Tecman organisation have sought to produce British-made protective visors for NHS frontline workers and has been collaborating closely with the NHS since.
As part of this initiative, the company funded over £500,000 in machinery that permitted them to increase production of protective face shields to over 1 million units per week. In June 2020, its original face shield became the first to obtain the category III complex design PPE level.
In appreciation of the product’s quality, the company’s face shield is defined by the NHS in its product framework and catalogue and has already been adopted by thousands of frontline workers across the country.
The next step for Tecman is to manage hospital trials on this innovative range of protective products.
Kevin Porter, Tecman’s technical director, stated: “We’ve worked hard alongside the NHS to develop a more sustainable reusable face shield system and we’re delighted with the results. This new sustainable solution addresses rising concerns about the environmental impact of disposable PPE, provides value to the NHS, and prioritises wearer comfort and the safety of our vital healthcare workers.”
