Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked the textile and garment industry to strongly shift from processing to production, aiming to create more highly added-value products

Prime Minister Phuc spoke at a ceremony to mark the 20th founding anniversary of the Vietnam Textile & Apparel Association (VITAS) in Hanoi on 13th December.

Prime Minister Phuc stressed that with 7,000 enterprises operating in the field, the sector was making important contributions to the country’s development.

He also praised VITAS for acting as a bridge between the government and enterprises, as well as offering policy consultations, particularly in negotiating free trade agreements (FTAs) between Vietnam and partners.

The Prime Minister then pressed the sector to convert to a production model in order to create higher added value products. With the increasing export turnover throughout the years, the sector was able to help ensure social security and promote economic structure shifts.

The Prime Minister then evaluated the many difficulties facing the industry at present, as much of protection is dependent on imported materials.

He asked that textile businesses focus on building their own trademarks with their products, and take measures to promote sustainable development. He also stressed that the businesses fully tap advantages brought by FTAs that Vietnam has joined.

The Prime Minister wished that the sector would make more efforts to reach a higher position within the economic value chain, with the aim of helping the country maintain its position as the world’s third biggest textile and garment producer.

The Prime Minister also then presented the Government’s Emulation Flag to the VITAS.
