The Microfibre Consortium (TMC) have released their latest progress update, covering the period from June 2022 to June 2024. As partners of TMC, PCIAW® is excited to share this comprehensive report detailing the strides made in addressing fibre fragmentation in the textile industry.
The report highlights significant achievements, including the growth of TMC’s signatory community to 101 organisations, representing a 26% increase since 2022. The Microfibre Data Portal now houses testing data for 848 fabrics, comprising over 10,000 unique data points from 241 manufacturers across 23 countries.
Key developments include the launch of the Microfibre Data Portal 2.0, offering enhanced analytics and reporting capabilities, and the introduction of the e-learning course “Control of Fibre Fragments in Wastewater” on the ZDHC Academy platform. The report also details progress in policy engagement, with TMC providing science-led expertise to initiatives such as the EU Product Environmental Footprint and the UNEP Plastics Treaty.
Looking ahead, TMC plans to develop the Fabric Shedding Rate indicator, a tool to help the industry interpret and act on fibre fragmentation test results with confidence. The organisation is also set to review and update its roadmap, moving from the “Activation” phase to “Implementation.”
As the textile industry faces increasing pressure to address microfibre pollution, this report serves as a crucial resource for understanding the current landscape and future directions. PCIAW® encourages all industry stakeholders to read the full report and consider how they can contribute to this vital work towards achieving zero impact from fibre fragmentation by 2030.
