INTERSCHUTZ was hosted in Hannover on 1-6 June 2026, attracting approximately 140,000 visitors from 144 countries, consolidating its role at the premier international show for fire and rescue services. Amid this global gathering, the Professional Clothing Industry Association Worldwide (PCIAW®) spearheaded a vital initiative, bringing a dedicated delegation of Fire and Rescue Services to the show through its Fire Buyers’ Network.
The Fire Buyers’ Network group was developed in close collaboration with Abby Hannah, International Sales Director at PBI Performance Products and PCIAW® Board Member. The primary objective of the network’s delegation was to facilitate critical knowledge sharing between procurement teams, end-users, and the supply chain.
Navigating the rapidly changing landscape of personal protective equipment (PPE) requires a deep understanding of manufacturing technology. To bridge this gap, PCIAW® hosted an exclusive educational tour, guiding fire service delegates through a curated network of member companies to examine the advanced science protecting frontline firefighters.
The thermal technology within PPE
The Fire Buyers’ Network tour began at the foundational level of garment construction: specialised high-performance fibres. The delegation first met with PBI Performance Products, where the focus was entirely on life-saving thermal protection. Delegates analysed how PBI’s inherent flame-resistant chemistry ensures structural PPE withstands extreme radiant heat and open flame to save lives.
PBI further cemented its role as an industry leader by hosting The Firefighters Podcast on its stand, driving thought leadership alongside the Utrecht Fire Service on the critical cleaning and maintenance of gear. The stand also welcomed Brett Egan-Bates from the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), who discussed crucial insights from the recent collaborative framework for the UK fire and rescue services.
Learning how PPE withstands the rigour of firefighting
To understand how fabric integrity is maintained under physical mechanical strain, the tour transitioned to global materials science leader Arclin. Following its recent transformational acquisition of DuPont’s iconic Aramids business, Arclin made its INTERSCHUTZ debut as the new steward of the Kevlar® and Nomex® portfolios.
While PBI delivers essential heat resistance, Arclin provides the durable tensile strength and ruggedness required to ensure the outer shell withstands everyday rigours and abrasions. At their stand, Arclin showcased its game-changing Nomex® Nano technology, demonstrating how next-generation thermal liners provide highly advanced, lightweight particulate protection while significantly improving moisture management and breathability to reduce life-threatening heat stress.
As the tour progressed, the focus shifted to the technical mid-layers that safeguard physiological health. Delegates evaluated high-performance moisture barriers and membranes with Gore-Tex Professional and Alpex Protection. These specialists demonstrated how modern barriers manage breathable comfort while blocking liquid penetration, hazardous chemicals, and bloodborne pathogens.
A step towards PFAS-free firefighting kit
This emphasis on chemical safety and advanced ergonomics naturally extended to the footwear sector during a visit to Tuffking. As the UK’s oldest firefighting boot manufacturer, Tuffking showcased its comprehensive range of high-performance firefighting and stationwear boots, drawing praise for its cutting-edge integration of PFAS-free waterproof membrane technologies. Crucially, Tuffking addressed a historically overlooked aspect of emergency worker health by showcasing inclusive female and male design fits developed with specialist lasts, ensuring optimal ergonomic support and safety for all frontline responders.
The next-generation of decontaminated protective clothing
The delegation then turned to complete garment solutions, visiting FlamePro and Ballyclare and LION Protects. Grouped together to focus on the future of equipment access, these manufacturers demonstrated significant ergonomic fit-for-form improvements in technical rescue and structural PPE. Crucially, their displays highlighted the exact cutting-edge gear made available to UK fire and rescue services as part of the collaborative framework discussed by the NFCC, ensuring a streamlined route to market for highly specified, movement-optimised garments.
Finally, the educational journey concluded with a look at post-incident health. At the Decontex stand, the delegation evaluated advanced decontamination solutions designed to remove highly toxic, volatile carcinogens that impregnate textiles during active firefighting. Understanding these particulate and toxin-removal technologies is essential for modern services looking to mitigate long-term health risks and occupational cancers.
By connecting fire and rescue services directly with key manufacturers across every tier of the supply chain, the PCIAW® Fire Buyers’ Network successfully demystified the technology behind modern PPE.
The delegation returned from Hannover equipped with the technical knowledge required to make informed, forward-thinking procurement decisions that prioritise the comfort, health, and safety of their frontline personnel.
