PCIAW® Leads Circularity Drive with New Member Stuff4Life

The PCIAW® is proud to welcome Stuff4Life as a new Trusted Member. This innovative organization is dedicated to addressing the material challenges faced by the professional clothing industry, with a particular focus on enabling a circular economy for workwear, uniforms, and PPE.

Earthshot Prize-nominated Stuff4Life partners with and supports organisations to address their material challenges, starting with textiles. Stuff4Life has developed interventions to address the main challenges presented by workwear – often complex, high-performance and hard-working. We do this through influencing design, enabling business transformation through transitioning to servitisation models, and creating the technology that is the foundation for the transition to full circularity, preparing for extended producer responsibility.

Stuff4Life Workwear has collaborated with Arco to create new products, services and end-of-life solutions for workwear, uniform and PPE. These products are high-performance, complex and often involve multiple materials to meet the demands of work environments – this can make recycling very difficult and to-date there are very few options.

With funding from Arco, working with Teesside University and the Centre for Process Innovation, Stuff4Life has developed its innovative polyester depolymerisation process which means workwear can be recycled back into as-good-as-new feedstock materials ready for remanufacture into new polyester.

Through identifying the main challenges in end-of-life workwear, our partnership with Arco has delivered improved design of new workwear, resulting in Arco’s award-winning Responsible Hi-Vis range. Stuff4Life Workwear is now in the process of financing the scale-up of our unique polyester depolymerisation processing capacity from kilograms to tonnes.

Our strong belief is to live life to the max… and that goes for clothing too! Stuff4Life Second Time, a not-for-profit company, is a result of the business servitisation work we have been doing to support several clients alongside our partnership with Arco and business disrupter Ekobi.

Our Second Time intervention keeps products in play for longer by giving them a second life, through rebranding, repairing or repurposing. In simple terms, the best way of reducing the impact of clothing is to keep it in play for longer, at the very least maximising its designed life expectancy.

The impact of this step is huge. Our experience suggests up to 50% of workwear could be reused or repurposed and whilst this will reduce over time as design and business systems improve, there will always be benefit to derive from the stuff that can’t be used by the original buyer.

With a strong belief in “living life to the max” – and applying the same philosophy to clothing – Stuff4Life is truly at the forefront of driving positive change in the professional clothing industry. The PCIAW® eagerly anticipates the valuable insights and innovative solutions that Stuff4Life will contribute as a Trusted Member, further strengthening our collective pursuit of sustainability and circularity.
