The Professional Clothing Industry Association Worldwide (PCIAW®) Summit & Exhibition 2024, held on 19th – 20th November at The VOX in Birmingham, brought together industry leaders to address critical challenges and showcase innovative solutions under the theme ‘Aligning Industry Innovation.’ The event, hosted by Lisa Lang, Director of Policy & EU Affairs Orchestrator at Climate-KIC, delivered comprehensive insights into the evolving landscape of professional clothing.
The event’s success was supported by Premier Sponsor Workwear Uniform Group, which showcased its commitment to innovation through its advanced distribution capabilities, and Key Sponsor The LYCRA® Company, demonstrating leadership in sustainable fibre solutions for the professional clothing sector.

Summit Day One
The summit opened with a thorough examination of global trade challenges, featuring a panel of PCIAW® members manufacturing in varying regions. Their discussion highlighted the ongoing impact of supply chain disruptions and emphasised strategies for building resilience in an uncertain market. Particularly noteworthy was the analysis of 2024’s status as ‘The Mega Election Year,’ with speakers exploring how national and provincial elections in 60 countries this year will influence trade policies, green investment strategies, and the effects of heightened protectionism.
Technology took centre stage too, as technology solutions demonstrated cutting-edge tools transforming the industry. Presentations showcased how blockchain technology, 3D design capabilities, and sophisticated PLM and ERP systems are revolutionising product development and end-of-life recycling. These innovations proved especially relevant as new regulations continue to demand greater supply chain transparency and traceability.

Sustainability had a spotlight focus, with PCIAW® members presenting breakthrough alternatives to traditional man-made fibres and cost-effective recycling strategies. Discussions centred on bio-based materials and strategies for increasing the ratio of recycled fibres in fabrics, marking a significant shift away from petrochemical dependence.
The integration of conductive yarns and wearable technologies also generated significant interest, with industry pioneers demonstrating practical applications ranging from health monitoring to risk detection systems.
Summit Day Two
The second day featured outcomes from various PCIAW® Round Table projects, each addressing specific industry challenges. The Defence Clothing for Modern Threats session revealed advances in textile innovation, while the Firefighter Safety discussion tackled the critical balance between protection and breathability. The Sustainable Textiles Regulations Round Table presented a comprehensive roadmap to 2050 for achieving circularity in complex material blends.
During the Inclusive Design Round Table panel experts shared insights on female-fit PPE and addressed considerations for menopause and neurodivergence in clothing design, which is an emerging consideration for DEI conscious businesses. The Essential Footwear Innovation discussion highlighted the complexities of professional footwear programmes and their health implications too, further reinforcing the importance of correct fit.

A highlight of the summit was the Professional Clothing Fashion Show, which served as a spectacular finale to the event. The runway presentation seamlessly merged corporate uniforms with luxury fashion sensibilities, while workwear and PPE demonstrations showcased the latest innovations in thermal protection. The catwalk proved that functional workplace garments could maintain high aesthetic standards while meeting rigorous safety requirements.
The event concluded with the Uniform Buyers’ Network Road Show, where leading buyers in the PCIAW® network represented end-user procurement teams, providing valuable insights into current challenges and future tender priorities. This session effectively bridged the gap between manufacturers and end-users, fostering meaningful dialogue about industry needs.
Throughout the two-day event, the PCIAW® Summit 2024 successfully delivered on its promise to align industry innovation with practical solutions, informing delegates about relevant solutions and providing a platform to forge new and engaging partnerships. The combination of expert panels, technology demonstrations, and the fashion show highlights PCIAW®’s leading position in bringing the whole professional clothing supply chain together.
The PCIAW® team is excited to invite delegates back to London in October 2025, where delegates can expect to receive all the latest updates from the professional clothing industry as we review the year and share what lies ahead in 2026.
