Seahawk Apparel: supporting students’ safe study at Strathclyde

Seahawk Apparel branded face mask

As universities around the country have welcomed students back to campus, there have inevitably been many changes and new measures put in place to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

As the Government advised wearing a face covering on public transport and in enclosed spaces, the University of Strathclyde laid down plans to ensure students have the highest quality learning experience in a safe and secure environment, and wanted to make sure washable face coverings would be available for everyone who needs them.

Finding a Scottish-based supplier was essential to the University’s procurement strategy, and the protective workwear specialist Scott Direct was appointed through the Scotland Excel Framework to provide a solution.

Manufactured at Seahawk Apparel, which is Scott Direct’s in-house garment manufacturing facility in Fife, these WHO-recommended earloop masks are made from three layers of 120 gsm cotton-blend fabric and are machine washable at 60 degrees. The design is BSI endorsed and is available in a range of colours as well as a clear option for lip-reading purposes.

The University of Strathclyde opted for a branded product in its Pantone blue colour featuring the University of Strathclyde logo. The first batch of its 30,000 unit order was delivered within two weeks.

Samantha Carr, Production Supervisor at Seahawk, said: “The local supply chain has been critical in many ways during the pandemic. As all of our manufacturing is done in-house, we have complete control over the end product and this has been invaluable when dealing with new product requirements and adaptions. We are able to offer the flexibility that customers need when specifying new products during this challenging time.”

“There are also the added economic and environmental benefits of dealing with a local supply chain, and it’s really encouraging to see major businesses and organisations tapping into the resources on their doorstep to support the local economy.”
