The gala, organised for the first time by the Association of Finnish Engineers, sought an act that promotes the social impact of the field and global well-being. Spinnova was chosen as the winner of the category from among the seven finalists by public vote.
The fibre developed by Spinnova and its manufacturing technology were awarded the Engineering Act of the Year award at the Engineering Gala in Tampere last Friday.
Spinnova was chosen as the winner among seven other finalists by public vote. Other nominees in the category included Teemu Aita and AINS Group’s Pollinator Bench, as well as Injeq Oy’s cerebrospinal fluid detecting smart needle. At the gala organized for the first time by the Finnish Association of Engineers, Miapetra Kumpula-Natri, Engineer of the Year Gofore, Member of the Year Johanna Kinnunen, and Tietola ry, member of the year, were also awarded.
“I strongly believe that new technologies will solve the great environmental challenges of our time, and the finalists in this competition are excellent examples of this. For this reason, the recognition given to SPINNOVA® fibre and our technology seems particularly meaningful. Spinnova’s story would not be possible without our great and competent team, so the biggest thanks go to all Spinnova’s staff. I would also like to thank all the voters,” says Juha Salmela, CTO and co-founder of Spinnova.
Spinnova’s first commercial-scale factory is expected to be completed in Jyväskylä at the end of this year. Within the next 10-12 years, the company aims to reach an annual SPINNOVA® fibre capacity of one million tonnes, providing international fashion brands with versatile and sustainable textile fibre for commercial-scale production.
Spinnova – Sustainable textile materials, naturally
Spinnova is revolutionizing the way textiles are made globally. Spinnova has developed a new kind of patented technology for making textiles from wood and waste streams such as leather, textile or food waste, without harmful chemicals. Spinnova is committed to using only sustainable raw materials such as FSC-certified wood and waste streams. SPINNOVA® fiber is produced without harmful or complex chemical processes and feels like natural fibers like cotton and flax.
