UK Government Destroys £1.4bn of Unused PPE

The UK government has destroyed or written off £1.4 billion worth of personal protective equipment (PPE) from a single Covid-era deal with Full Support Healthcare. This revelation, uncovered by a BBC investigation, represents what is believed to be the most wasteful government contract of the pandemic.

Of the 2.02 billion PPE items provided by Full Support Healthcare, only 232 million have been used in healthcare settings. The rest have either been burned, destroyed, or classified as excess stock facing potential disposal.

The contract, initially valued at £1.78 billion, was the largest Covid PPE order from a single supplier. Full Support Healthcare, a small Northamptonshire-based company, had just 25 staff before the pandemic and expanded rapidly to meet demand during the Covid-19 outbreak.

The wastage has sparked criticism from opposition parties, who describe it as a staggering waste and a colossal misuse of public funds.
