Amphico sustainable textile material science feature image

We are delighted to welcome Amphico as a new member. An innovative London-based material science company redefining the future of sustainable textiles through cutting-edge performance and colour technologies.

Founded in 2018 by designer, scientist and entrepreneur Jun Kamei, Amphico was born from pioneering research at the Royal College of Art focused on biomimicry and advanced polymer engineering. Since then, the company has evolved into a leader in developing next-generation textile systems that eliminate the need for harmful toxic chemistries while maintaining the high performance expected from outdoor and technical apparel.

At the heart of Amphico’s innovation is Amphitex™, a PFAS-free waterproof and breathable membrane platform designed as a sustainable alternative to traditional performance textiles. Unlike conventional waterproof materials that often rely on fluorinated chemicals and difficult-to-recycle multi-layer constructions, Amphitex™ is engineered using polyolefin chemistry to support recyclability and circular design.

The textile industry has long depended on PFAS “forever chemicals” and solvent-heavy manufacturing processes to achieve durability, water resistance and breathability. Amphico is challenging this long-standing industry standard by proving that high-performance materials do not need to come at the expense of environmental responsibility. Their technologies are designed to reduce embedded chemical risks, support cleaner production methods and enable scalable adoption across the apparel and materials industries.

In addition to Amphitex™, the company is also developing Amphicolor™, a predictive waterless colour platform that addresses one of the textile industry’s most resource-intensive processes: dyeing and coloration. By reducing water use and hazardous chemistry while improving design flexibility, Amphico is helping to shape a more sustainable future for textile manufacturing.

Amphico has already gained recognition across the innovation and sustainability sectors through collaborations with academic institutions, manufacturing partners and global industry leaders. The company has also received support from organisations including Innovate UK and the Future Fashion Factory programme, further demonstrating the industry’s confidence in its mission and technology.

“Joining PCIAW allows Amphico to engage with different stakeholders within the PPE space in a more considered manner. Introducing our technologies to a new industry and understanding compliance, regulations and performance related to PPE.

– Lara Pizzato, Brand, Marketing & Business Development Director

As regulations surrounding PFAS and environmentally harmful chemicals continue to tighten globally, Amphico’s work represents an important step forward for the future of performance textiles and circular material innovation. Their commitment to combining science, engineering and design aligns strongly with the values of forward-thinking organisations working towards a cleaner and more responsible industry.

“The future of sustainable textile innovation lies in collaboration across industries and applications. We believe that no single material or technology can drive change alone, and the most transformative shifts happen when aligned partners, shared standards, and a genuine willingness to build something new converge around a common goal.”

– Lara Pizzato, Brand, Marketing & Business Development Director

We are excited to welcome Amphico to our growing network and look forward to supporting their continued innovation and impact in sustainable materials and textile technology.
